Improving Convergence of Adolescent Health and Well-being Programs in Uttar Pradesh

In the heart of Uttar Pradesh, Project Utthan is nurturing a generation of healthier, more confident adolescents who are finally finding the courage to dream and decide their own futures. Since 2024, Project Utthan, in partnership with the National Health Mission (NHM), UP, has been working across Barabanki, Bareilly, and Sonbhadra to transform systems, strengthen capacities, and shape policies to create an enabling ecosystem for adolescent well-being.
In partnership with UNICEF and supported by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, this transformative initiative is aligned with the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) and aims to close immunisation gaps, reduce the number of children without doses, and foster lasting community ownership. It is operational across six districts of Uttar Pradesh — Hamirpur, Mirzapur, Chitrakoot, Banda, Sonbhadra, and Sant Ravi Das Nagar.
The project focuses on connecting unvaccinated and under-vaccinated children with essential immunisation services, addressing vaccine hesitancy, and overcoming social and cultural barriers. By strengthening the capacities of 440 plus ASHAs, AWWs, and ANMs, and engaging SHGs, local influencers, and faith leaders, the project is turning awareness into action. Through community mobilisation, household mapping, interactive training sessions, and the creation of communication materials, it has helped families see vaccines not just as doses — but as shields of safety for their children.
As the project nears the completion of its first phase, it stands on the cusp of more profound transformation. The second phase (February–December 2026) will build on this strong foundation — expanding reach, consolidating community trust, and moving closer to a future where every child is protected, every family is informed, and every community is resilient.

The Tele-MANAS helpline and counselling pilots in Bareilly are opening more doors for young people to seek support when they need it most. With active District Adolescent Health Committees guiding the way, Project Utthan is setting new standards of accountability, collaboration, and compassion—ensuring that every young person in Uttar Pradesh can step forward with confidence into a healthier, brighter future
